How to calculate CGPA in UNILAG

A lot of Nigerian students have found it difficult to grab how to calculate their grades and CGPA. The grading system in Nigerian Universities is easy to understand. However, it could be quite complicated and complex for those who do not understand it yet. The grading system for the University of Lagos (Unilag) like other Nigerian Universities focuses on the cumulative summary of a student’s annual total score. In this article, I am going to be teaching how to calculate CGPA in Unilag.

If you are a student of Unilag and you have been finding it difficult to calculate CGPA, I will show you how it is done.

What you should know about Grading System in Nigerian Universities

Firstly, I would like to give you the meaning of some acronyms we are going to be using regularly in this article.

 

Grade Point (GP):

This is a standard grading system that is determined by a particular score range obtained by the students. Below is a tabular representation of the Grading point system in Unilag and other Nigerian Universities.

Score	Grades	Grade Point
70 and above	A	5
60-69	B	4
50-59	C	3
45-49	D	2
40-44	E	1
0-39	F	0

 

Quality Point (QP):

This is calculated by multiplying the grade point of a student by the number of credit units of a course. For Example, Tunde got a ‘B’ (grade point of B is 4) in CSC 101 which has a credit unit of 4. To calculate his QP, we get to this:

QP = Grade Point X Credit Unit

So Tunde’s QP for CSC 101 would be = 4 X 4 = 16

Total Quality Point (TQP):

The total quality point is the sum of the quality points of all the courses a student wrote.

Total Credit Unit (CU):

This is the total of the credit units of each course a student offered.

 

Grade Point Average (GPA):

This is the sum of all the quality points divided by the number of credit units of all the courses offered. This is the calculated point average within a single semester.

GPA = Quality Point/ Credit Unit

 

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA):

This is the sum of all the quality points divided by the credit units for all the courses offered. The CGPA is different from the GPA because it is calculated after you have completed more than one semester in the University. While GPA is calculated within a single semester, CGPA is the overall point average for more than one semester.

So here is how to calculate the CGPA:

 Cumulative Grade Point Average =     Total Quality Point (TQP)/Total Credit Unit (TCU)

 

Below is an example of how to calculate your grades in Unilag

Here is an example of how to calculate CGPA in Unilag. Like I said earlier, the CGPA is calculated as an overall grade point while the GPA is the grade point of only a single semester.

See an Example below:

This is Tunde’s result for his first year in Unilag.

First Semester

Course	Credit Unit (CU)	Grade	Grade Point	Quality Point =  (GP X CU)

Recall that, GPA = Quality Point /Credit Unit

So Tunde’s GPA for the first semester in his first year would be:

GPA = QP (75) / CU (18) = 75/18 = 4.17

 

The second semester would require the need to calculate the CGPA because it involves more than one semester.

Here is an example of calculating the CGPA. In Tunde’s second semester, he got the following grade below:

Second Semester

Course	Credit Unit (CU)	Grade	Grade Point	Quality Point =  (GP X CU)
MTH 102	4	A	5	20
CSC 102	4	A	5	20
CSC 104	4	A	5	20
STAT 103	3	B	4	12
STAT  105	3	C	3	9

Recall that, GPA = Quality Point /Credit Unit

So Tunde’s GPA for the second semester in his first year would be:

GPA = QP (87) / CU (20) = 87/20 = 4.35

To calculate Tunde’s CGPA, we are going to sum his QP for his first and second semesters. We are also going, to sum up, the total credit units for the first and second semesters. This is illustrated below:

CGPA = Total Quality Point (TQP) / Total Credit Unit (CU)

Total QP = 87 + 75 = 162, Total CU = 18 + 20 = 38

CGPA = 162/38 = 4.26

 

The above calculation shows that Tunde got a GPA of 4.17 in his first-semester result. However, Tunde’s GPA in the second semester increased to 4.35. This means that Tunde got a CGPA of 4.26 at the end of the first year.

Another way to calculate CGPA is by adding the GPA of each semester and then dividing it by the number of the total semesters. This is how you can do this:

First semester GPA (4.17) + second semester GPA (4.35) = 8.52 

8.52 divided by the total number of semesters (2) = 4.26

Tunde’s CGPA

For Example, If Tunde gets a GPA of 4.30 in his 200 level first semester. Tunde’s CGPA would be the sum of his three GPA divided by 3. 

4.17 + 4.35 + 4.30 = 12.82

CGPA for 200 level first semester would be: 12.82/3 = 4.27

The above illustration I did is how to calculate CGPA in Unilag. This is also applicable to other Nigerian Universities.
