How to get WAEC certificate

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) offers certificates to candidates who sat for the WAEC examinations.

For those who do not know, the WAEC certificate is categorized into two candidates. The first one is for WAEC (May to June) candidates. This exam is usually written by senior secondary school students.

The second one is for the WAEC GCE candidates. WAEC GCE is an external exam that is usually written around November and December every year. 

In this article, I am going to be giving you a guide on how to get your WAEC certificate. Continue reading to know how to do this.

WAEC certificate (May/June)

WAEC candidates who participated in the May/June series of the examination can only get their certificate from the school.

 If you sat for the May/June exams you will be notified by your school authority when the certificate is ready. This might attract some charges though this charge is solely dependent on the school management.

However, those who participated in the 2021 May/June WAEC exams should not be expecting to get their certificate this year. This is because the certificate is only ready within one year after writing the exams.

The examination board will announce to the public whenever the certificates are ready. 

On the other hand, WAEC GCE candidates can get their WAEC certificate online or at WAEC’s office.

WAEC certificate (November/December)

To collect your WAEC certificate, they are certain requirements and documents that every candidate must provide. You must provide the following:

• Firstly, you will have to provide an application letter.
• Result printout 
• Your ID card
• A passport
• Photocard 
• An affidavit from a High court.

You should not laminate the WAEC certificate after collecting it. You can keep it in a safe envelope or transparent bag to avoid tearing.

WAEC (November/December) candidates can collect their certificate directly from the branch offices of the Exams board. You are to pay around N5, 000 to collect the certificate.

Alternatively, you can request your WAEC certificate via the management portal. I will give you a step-by-step guide on how to request your certificate online.

How to make payment

You can make payments through the portal or via any bank across the country. Follow the instructions below to do this:

• Go to Visit the certificate issuance portal at certrequest.waec.ng
• Type in your examination number.
• Proceed to make the online payments
• Click on the button that reads ‘request original certificate/result’

Consequences for late collection 

WAEC charges candidates who fail to collect their certificates for a long period. The fine which is known as ‘custody fee’ is given depending on the number of years you fail to collect the certificate. This means that the more years you delay the collection of your certificate, the more money you will be charged.

This is clearly illustrated in the table below:

You do not want to pay this fee for the excuse of negligence. Try as much as possible to collect the certificate when it is released.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) is the examination body that organizes the Senior Secondary Certificate Exams senior (SSCE). It was founded in the year 1952 and is established in five West African countries. 

Countries like Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia are involved in the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The West African Senior Secondary Certificate Exams are categorized into two; the internal exam which takes place in May/June every year and is written by secondary school students.

The external takes place in November/December and is a private examination.

Does the WAEC certificate expire?

The answer is No, your WAEC certificate does not have a life span. It is valid forever.

How many subjects can I register in WAEC?

WAEC candidates are to register 9 subjects for their Examinations. However, the minimum number they are to register is 8. WAEC GCE candidates, on the other hand, are permitted to register for  7 subjects.

Can I combine my WAEC and NECO results to get admission into the University? 

This is very possible. In most Nigerian Universities, you can combine both results providing you get at least five credits (including English Language and Mathematics). However, Universities abroad only approve WAEC results and not a combination of both.
